Education: M.A. Geography & Environment, San Francisco State University; B.A. Wellesley College (Maj. Biology, Maj. French)

Current position: Associate Director, Institute for Geographic Information Science

Collaboration with: JPB Fellow Lara Cushing
JPB funds supported Anna Studwell to work with Fellow Lara Cushing on developing measures of greenspace, air pollution, and noise for a study on neighborhood determinants of birth outcomes.

Anna Studwell is the Associate Director for the Institute for Geographic Information Science at San Francisco State University, and oversees the GIS teaching and research computer labs, the SFSU GIS Certificate Program, and works with graduate and undergraduate students on publishing GIS research and hosting workshops for university affiliates. She specializes in research involving marine geospatial planning for conservation as well as public health GIS projects. She was involved with the development of the California Ocean Litter Prevention Strategy and seeks to find solutions to the ever-increasing environmental health issue of plastic pollution. With the support of JPB funds, she worked with Director of the IGISc, Jerry Davis, Dr. Nancy Wilkinson, Dr. Lara Cushing, and graduate student researcher Ana Pelegrini Guimaraes on developing methods to derive measures of greenspace, air pollution, and noise to understand their impact on birth outcomes. We acknowledge San Francisco State’s IGISc, through which the researchers use funds from contracts like these to maintain specialized GIS and remote sensing software that they made good use of to support Dr. Cushing’s Fellowship project.
